Track Day returns to Willow Springs for 2013!
MOTOR PRESS GUILD TRACK DAY – WILLOW SPRINGS RACEWAY
MPG has brought Track Day back to Willow Springs International Raceway in the high-desert of Rosamond, Calif. on October 1-2
MPG Track Day is a traditional rite of fall for many MPG members. It’s an important event that gives journalists and analysts a rare chance to directly compare the latest hardware from most of the major (and many smaller) car companies doing business in the U.S. After several solid years at the Auto Club Speedway, MPG members overwhelmingly supported bringing Track Day back to Willow Springs in the 2013 MPG Member Survey. There were a few changes on the return to Willow—notably a move to a newer hotel—but otherwise it was a smooth transition that brought back good memories of why it’s such a popular venue. There’s nothing quite like a natural road course to get a bead on chassis dynamics and Willow has two good ones: The blazing-fast Big Willow track that dates back to the mid-’50’s and the Streets of Willow, a tighter layout that’s a bit more “real world” and gives the brakes a tougher workout. There are some pretty serious off-road courses in the hills behind the tracks that offer a good test of off-road performance. Members also like the street drives on the rural roads with little traffic to slalom; just watch out for the occasional critters.Somethings never change; Willow Springs is pretty much like it was when we left about five years ago. It remains an appealing group of tracks with it’s own funky history, and yes, the wind, the dust and the abundant sunshine are ever present. Nice to be back!
